The morning after her exposé hit the university's online news portal, Ellie Parker walked onto the Lakeview University campus with a mixture of pride and trepidation. The article had caused more of a stir than she'd anticipated, and she could feel the weight of countless eyes following her progress across the quad. Some gazes were admiring, others curious, but a few burned with unmistakable hostility.

As she approached the Humanities building, a familiar voice cut through the murmur of the crowd. "Well, if it isn't our very own Pulitzer Prize winner."

Ellie turned to see Bianca Sinclair leaning against a modernist sculpture, her perfectly manicured nails tapping against her sleek smartphone. The blonde's smile was sweet, but her eyes glittered with malice.

"Bianca, I-" Ellie began, but Bianca cut her off with a wave of her hand.

"Save it, Ellie. You think you're so clever with your little exposé, don't you? Well, enjoy your fifteen minutes of fame. Because trust me, it won't last."

Before Ellie could respond, Bianca pushed off the sculpture and sauntered away, leaving a wake of whispers in her path. Ellie felt a chill run down her spine, reminiscent of the cool Kenyan nights she used to experience back home. She'd known Bianca wouldn't take the article lying down, but the ice in the other girl's voice suggested this was far from over.

Throughout the day, Ellie noticed strange looks from her classmates. Whispers followed her from lecture to lecture, and she caught snippets of conversation that made her stomach churn.

"I heard she hacked the university's grading system..."

"No way she got those scores honestly..."

By lunchtime, the rumors had reached a fever pitch. Ellie sat alone at a table in the dining hall, pushing her vegetarian curry around her plate, when Raj from the Math Olympiad team approached.

"Hey, Ellie," he said, his voice low and concerned. "You okay? There's some pretty nasty stuff going around about you."

Ellie looked up, grateful for a friendly face. "Yeah, I've heard. I don't understand where it's all coming from."

Raj's expression darkened. "I think I might have an idea. I overheard Bianca talking to some people in the Green Bean. She was... well, she was pretty explicit about ruining your reputation."

Ellie's heart sank. She'd expected retaliation, but this was beyond what she'd imagined. "Thanks for telling me, Raj. I appreciate it."

As Raj walked away, Ellie's phone buzzed with a message from Dr. Hartley: "See me after class. Urgent."

The rest of the day passed in a blur of anxiety. When Ellie finally made it to Dr. Hartley's classroom, she found the professor looking uncharacteristically serious.

"Ellie, I'm afraid we have a situation," Dr. Hartley said, gesturing for Ellie to take a seat. "There have been... allegations. About your academic integrity."

Ellie felt the blood drain from her face. "What? But I've never cheated!"
